Totally Tubular Chrysocolla

Etched sterling silver hand-crafted into a tube creates a unique seat for a pretty Chrysocolla stone.

Totally Tubular starts off as a sheet of sterling silver; after transferring the flowery design to the metal, I etch it for several hours to create the pattern you see. I then heat the metal to a high temperature (annealing) to make it pliable; and start to hammer it to bend it and form the tube. I anneal, hammer and shape it repeatedly until I get the tube perfectly aligned; also creating space at the top to set a stone.

I then solder the bezel (to hold the gemstone) in place while soldering the tube closed, to maintain the alignment.

Once I’m satisfied with the solder work, I clean and polish the piece, and drill the back for the chain. Then the lovely Chrysocolla stone is set in the top of Totally Tubular. Final cleaning and polishing lead to the last step, patinating the piece to highlight the depth of the inspirational art.

The deep, green-blue depths of the Chrysocolla brings soothing calm to this piece.
