Anatomy of: The Tokolon Twist

Anatomy of: The Tokolon Twist

I may just be the luckiest girl in the world.  It took, clearly, years of experience and life lessons but I finally met my match.  Uber compatibility is a rare thing and something to celebrate every day.

When we moved in together, essentially I moved my entire house into his.  And as I unpacked years of stuff, odd bits of metalworking tools popped up.  And jewelry.  And things.  So my guy, as fun and interesting and generous and flexible and curious as he is, not only encouraged me to revive this endeavor, but joined in with enthusiasm, support, ideas and a whole lot of energy.  And started designing and forming his own creations.  And since he’s a guy and wanted to ultimately wear what he made, a bracelet was the first thing that came to mind.  To keep it basic for the first effort was key… soldering, minimal metal manipulation, no frippery like, say, beads and such.  So a sterling silver twist of metal was the logical choice.  Square, solid, shiny.

The first step is to measure.

And then cut.

Intense concentration is necessary as well as the correct headgear.

Then the magic happens…..the twisting!

Ha, just kidding.

It really happens with clamps and stuff.  And A LOT of hand strength.  I don’t think I would be able to twist this gauge (thickness) of metal by hand.

And then lots of polishing, everyone’s favorite part of the show.

But the result is well worth it.

This lovely bracelet is featured on the website in a couple of different twist patterns and is a star at live shows! The creativity in custom work is fun. A thought or tentative suggestion….”do you think it would be possible to….” that is really the desire to commemorate a special occasion, communicate a special thought or set an amorphous, fleeting feeling into something solid and real.
